Founding Members

The Brazilian Society of Tropical Medicine (BSTM) was officially founded on November 17, 1962, in Ribeirao Preto, during a meeting at the Sao Paulo Medical School. However, as written in “BSTM’s Beginnings”, at the time, Professor Jose Rodrigues da Silva contacted several Brazilian Tropical Medicine leader, and consolidated in a meeting in Salvador, Bahia, in November 12, 1960.

The foundation happened in three stages. The first started by the end of the 1950s and beginning of the 1960s, when Professor Jose Rodrigues da Silva met with Professor Oscar Versiani Caldeira, time when they had the first agreements about the creation of the Society.  The second stage happened during a meeting in Salvador, Bahia, about kala-azar, when professors Amilcar Viana Martins, Aluizio Prata and Jose Rodrigues da Silva decided to gather the participants of the mentioned meeeting to deepen the initial discussions of professors Rodrigues da Silva and Versiani Caldeira, who unfortunately was not present at the meeting in Salvador, where he was represented by professor Jayme Neves. In this meeting, that took place in November 12th 1960, were present professors Fernando Magalhaes, Manoel Jose Ferreira, Mauro Pereira Barretto, Leonidas de Mello Deane, Jayme Neves, Jose Rodrigues da Silva, Joaquim Eduardo Alencar, Alexandre Leal Costa, Aluizio Prata, Jorge Leocadio de Oliveira and Randolfo dos Santos Teixeira, who took the minutes of the meeting. And at this meeting begun to analyze the measures that could lead to the creation of a Brazilian Society of Tropical Diseases.

Professor Rodrigues accepted the nomination as president of the Society and suggested professor Achilles Scorzelli Junior to be his secretary; and responding to the suggestion of a few of the presents, suggested the following names to compose the consultive commission: Joaquim Eduardo Alencar, Aluizio Prata, Joao Alves Meira, Rui Joao Marques, Oscar Versiani Caldeira, Orlando R. Costa, Eduardo Correia Lima and Antonio Louzada. At last he expressed his satisfaction, which is also shared by professor Amilcar Viana Martins, to witness the rise of a new Society in Bahia State, land where he planted the Brazilian Tropicalist School.

The founders, in their majority, participated in the meeting. Under the minutes of the meeting, there is a list of the Founding Members and the members of the first board, which was signed by the 40 present participants in the Ribeirao Preto meeting. After this, another 33 people who justified their absences were added, but were considered as Founding Members by the board.
